Kat met me at the lobby of my building, her breath coming in short gasps.

“I promise you I didn’t know that Charlie invited him too! I thought we were going to Makati to pick you up but we turned into Valero and stopped in front of his office and suddenly he’s in the car I’m sorry—”

Him could only be one person.

It was entirely possible to see him again in this small world we lived in, but if he rejoined his old circles I didn’t expect to see him at all. We didn’t overlap.

But we would, if I made the mistake of stepping back into his space.

I felt it would be immature to back out on Kat right then. It had been several months.

“It’s all right,” I went, and I hoped Kat believed me. “We’ll have a great time, eat the food. It’ll be all right.”

Then I got in the car and it was like old times: Charlie driving, Kat in the front passenger seat, and me and Antonio U. Santos in the back. Except there was no hand-holding, or hand-kissing.

In fact, Anton didn’t even return my big, nice-to-see-you smile.
